Resonant Ideas: Continual learning in pedagogical knowledge and technology integration

Coaches need to be up to date on the science of learning in order to evaluate and recommend technology-based solutions to teachers. As part of my work for the Digital Education Leadership program I chose an elective called Neuroscience and Pedagogy which provided an overview of findings in neuroscience that relate to teaching, plus practical methods to try in the classroom, such as interleaving, which I describe in this brief PowerPoint presentation designed for teachers. I applied some of what I learned from that class to the post Neuroscience and Learning, where I examined a number of “neuromyths” and the outsize effect they can have on educators when perpetuated by questionable sources. I also included a list of reliable resources on educational neuroscience and described the positive effects of sound brain research when applied to reading instruction.

I have learned through my work in this program how important formative assessment is for all learners, including adults. Two of my posts: “Try It, You’ll Like It”: Formative Assessment in Professional Development and Just in Time: Formative Assessment address why formative assessment’s low-stakes, flexible format works to increase understanding, and describe technology tools that enable its use in the classroom.
