Resonant Ideas: Digital-age education for ALL students + Shared Vision

I chose the DEL program because I believed it would support my interest in promoting more equitable and accessible technology education, particularly in Computer Science. I believe that technology tools need to better reflect the diverse needs of the people using them, and that will only happen if the developers of digital tools are themselves more diverse.

Digital-age Education for ALL Students

Two of my three Digital Education Guiding Principles from my Digital Education Leadership Mission Statement have to do with equity, accessibility, and inclusiveness.

This is what has driven me to go back to school and change careers later in life. I believe that what students are exposed to in elementary and middle school has a big effect on the careers and interests they pursue as adults. I offer proof of this in the background research I did for EDTC 6106 Community Engagement project (published privately) and my post Social Coding: Engaging Girls in K-8 Computer Science, which describes ways to encourage girls’ interest in coding and technology in order to help diversify the pool of students taking AP CS exams and graduating with CS degrees.

Shared Vision

My post Culture & Technology-Enhanced Instructional Practice looks at how culture affects technology adoption in education, and the role administrators play in communicating a vision and supporting risk in a school or district.  Without purposeful technology leadership, the culture of individual schools will fill the vacuum and make widespread adoption of best practices more difficult.

A coach’s local role in understanding, communicating, and modeling the broader vision can contribute to transforming the way technology is used throughout a district, one school at a time.
